The bandwidth of the first single lane of PCIe is 250MB/s as PCIe X16 slot which used to install graphics and we can see in name X16 means there are 16 PCIe lanes allocated their, as I told earlier speed of single lane of PCIe Gen 1, is 250MB/s, so the speed of PCIe X16 (Gen 1) is 4GB/s. As I said the major advantage of PCIe is serial transmission mode, that's why there is a huge scope of improvements in PCIe. With each generation of PCIe, bandwidth gets doubled. Like bandwidth of PCIe X1 (Gen 1) is 250 GB/s so with the next generation bandwidth of PCIe X1 (Gen 2) is 500 MB/s, and if we calculate the bandwidth of PCIe X16 (Gen 2) then we get 8GB/s. Bandwidth of PCIe X1 (Gen 3) is 1GB/s and PCIe X16 have bandwidth of 16GB/s. The bandwidth of PCIe X1 (Gen 4) is 2GB/s and PCIe X16 (Gen4) has a bandwidth of 32GB. The bandwidth of PCIe X1 (Gen 5) is 4GB/s and PCIe X16 (Gen 5) has a bandwidth of 64GB. We can clearly see, that PCIe has much better bandwidth over AGP so we ditched AGP completely. and Now on the modern motherboard, we don't see Legacy PCI slots. PCIe is directly connected to the processor. In case if Processor only has 20 PCI lanes support then 16 lanes are allocated for Graphics and 4 for M.2 NVME SSD and if there are multiple PCI slots on the single motherboard then the remaining lanes are connected to Chipset. If you wanted to connect multiple GPUs and SSDs in a single system you must have the best possible chipset which is present on the motherboard and not replaceable.
