In this lesson, I’m going to give you a two part scale shape that works perfect over three popular chords that are all taken from the key of “C” Major. Those three chords will be; “C,” “Am,” and “G.” To help you understand how all of this works, you’ll need to understand exactly how the “C” scale can be used to create licks that are perfect for the chords of; “C,” (major) “Am” and “G” (major). The approach to doing this may surprise you because it’s not just about playing certain notes on certain chords. The “C,” “Am” and “G” chords are the Root, sixth and fifth chords found inside of the key of “C.” This means that the associated scales for composing licks around these chords can either be the full 7-tone “C” Major scale, or the more compact 5-tone “C” Major Pentatonic. In this lesson, we’ll focus on two unique scale shapes of “C” Major Pentatonic. These shapes use two fingerboard patterns in the same position of the neck to cover the third to seventh fret area. To get started, we will begin with a scale shape for playing licks against the Root Chord of “C” Major. Then, we’ll move on to working with another shape that will work well for covering the; “Am” and “G” chords.
