They were both plugged into Fender Twin Reverb amps Let's talk about the guitar tone on the recording. Their Twin Reverbs were rated at 100 watts, making them very clean and loud and difficult to distort. This has puzzled Beatles gear nerds for years, and I don't have an answer as to why the tones are so crunchy. One explanation was that they had to play much louder on the rooftop outdoors, driving the Twin's preamps. Another theory is that their amps were early UK imported prototypes of the Silverface line of Fender amps, which had a different circuit I'm achieving this crunch by using boost pedals into my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb, a very similar amp to their Twin Reverbs.
