In this video I figure out how to mount a GFS NYII surface-mount pickup at the bridge position in my Epiphone Casino and do a back-and-forth tone shootout comparing it against the stock Epiphone dogear P90. These Far East-produced Epiphone Casinos are generally derided for the muffled, dull, wooly tone of the overwound factory dogear P90 pickups. The GFS NY2 is an affordable ($40) Korean-made, hand-wound single-coil pickup that uses mini-P90-style construction within a vintage Rickenbacker- or DeArmond/Gretsch Dynasonic-style case. My bridge NY II pickup measures 8k DC resistance (so 400 less hot than advertised). Listen to the shootout and make up your own mind, and feel free to share in the comments what you think. But my mind is made up. I love how it sounds and I love how it looks. The top-end that was completely missing and boxed-in opens up, and I'm getting more of the crisp Rickenbacker-/Gretsch-/Dynasonic-style single coil chime and jangle that I needed for my style of playing, which is generally 1960s-influenced with a clean-ish amp tone. If this Epiphone Casino de-muffling project interests you, I'm only less than half done. The neck pickup is not only still very very wooly, but it is also now unusably out-of-balance both volume- and tone-wise with the bridge pickup.
